The Union of the Sun and the Moon
Many years ago I was introduced to a profound collection of writings from antiquity called the ‘Corpus Hermeticum’, known more commonly today as ‘The Hermetica’.
According to historians, this collection of 17 manuscripts was originally written around 100-200 AD. However, due to its controversial nature, it was hidden for nearly 1400 years until it resurfaced in Florence Italy in the 15th century.
These ancient manuscripts were attributed to an enigmatic deity in Greek, Roman, and Egyptian mythologies that was known by many names in their respective cultures.
The Egyptians called him Djehuty, the Romans acknowledged him as Mercurious (Mercury) and the Greeks referred to him Hermes Trismegistus (or Thoth).
In their cosmologies, he was regarded as the god of wisdom, the messenger and scribe of the deities, and the initiator of spiritual mysteries.
The Egyptians revered him as the creator of writing, math, and geometry as well as the architect of the Pyramids. Beyond these monumental contributions, he was also acknowledged as the inventor of astronomy, medicine, alchemy, and magic.
His archetypal roles and functions in these ancient traditions were vast and remarkably unique for any deity or mythological figure in the ancient world. According to historians, he was revered by the ancient peoples of Egypt and North Africa for over 3000 years.
I approached this painting as a deep contemplation and practice to integrate the Hermetic fragments of wisdom that I have learned.
It took me 19 months, off and on, to paint this image as I studied and contemplated all of the Hermetic teachings I could find.
The final result is this vision I call, ‘The Union of the Sun and the Moon.’
I offer this hieroglyph to honor and inspire the spirit of creativity, wisdom and magic within us all.
This painting is dedicated to my dear friend, brother and teacher, Christopher “Aha” Wolkoski.
As he would often sing “The light is one, though the lamps be many.”
